5 tips to stay consistent with prenatal supplements
On your fertility journey, in addition to changing the foods you eat, and the way you live, supplementation may also be necessary depending on what your specific needs are.
As a foodie myself, I definitely encourage using foods as the foundation of supporting your body for pregnancy preparation.
If you already know what supplements you need to be taking, check my tips below. And if you’re curious about what I might recommend, read to the end to learn more about some of the supplements I recommend to my fertility clients!
Pair supplementation with another existing habit.
For example, if you brush your teeth every morning or have a morning beverage, take your supplements right after. But beware about taking calcium/mineral-containing supplements around coffee or tea since these beverages can interfere with their absorption.
When I started taking the Heart and Soil Supplements Bone Matrix after noticing mineral loss in my teeth from 5+ years of growing life exclusively from my body, I began taking mine at least 1 hour after drinking coffee on the days I’d have it.
2. Keep them in a high traffic place like the kitchen or bathroom.
For example, I keep mine next to my hot water dispenser because I’m regularly serving myself hot water or herbal teas throughout the day. The more you see them, the more likely you are to remember to take them!
3. Use a SMTWFS container.
I know what you’re thinking, “but I don’t want to be like grandma and admit that I have to take a bunch of pills!” 💊
Supplements are different than medications! Many are nutrients or herbs that you would historically be eating/drinking but you either have some mental blocks keeping you from eating the actual foods *ahem, organ meats* or you just can’t get enough of the foods in your diet because of the way agricultural practices are destroying our soil, a topic for another day. A gentle reminder that taking care of your health now will make it less likely for you to go down the same path your older generations may be going down AND you’ll be doing your future generations a favor by optimizing the epigenetic influences (lifestyle factors that directly turn on and off certain genes) on the eggs your body is preparing to release at ovulation!
4. Engage your partner.
Especially on your conscious conception journey, you and your partner should be preparing together - with food, with lifestyle, and with supplements- so either you can agree to keep each other accountable by reminding each other to to take them or even better, take them together!
5. Buy a 3-6 month supply.
If you run out, you might get out of the routine of taking your supps so stocking up on ones you know you’re going to be taking for a while is a great way to streamline this habit and stay consistent (learned this one from my hubby 😉). Not only will we you save on shipping but you’ll be able to stay consistent without skipping a beat!
